Everything You Need to Know About GoNano Nanotechnology Treatments
Nanotechnology surface protection is a relatively new concept for many homeowners — and we love talking about it. Below are the answers to the questions we hear most often. If you don’t see yours here, call us at 403-371-6677 or send us a message. We’ll always give you a straight answer.
What Is Nanotechnology, and How Does It Protect Surfaces?
Nanotechnology is science and engineering performed at the nanoscale. To put it in perspective: one meter equals one billion nanometers. A single nanoparticle is roughly 30,000 times smaller than a human hair.
The nanoparticles in GoNano’s treatments range from 40 to 60 nanometers in size — small enough to penetrate the molecular structure of materials like asphalt, concrete, wood, and roofing membranes. Once inside, they permanently modify the material’s properties to make it stronger, more flexible, more water-resistant, and more UV-resistant.
This is fundamentally different from a paint or coating, which simply adds a layer on top of a surface. GoNano treatments work from the inside out.
General Questions
Q: What surfaces can Nano Guard Alberta treat?
A: Nano Guard Alberta’s GoNano treatments can be applied to four main surface categories: asphalt shingles, elastomeric/SBS roof membranes, concrete and asphalt surfaces (driveways, walkways, patios, parking areas), and wood surfaces (decks, fences, siding, and outdoor structures). Each surface type has a specific GoNano product formulated to deliver optimal protection.
Q: How long do GoNano treatments last?
A: Protection lasts 10 to 15 years for asphalt shingle treatments, and up to 10 years for concrete, asphalt, wood, and membrane treatments. Each treatment comes backed by a comprehensive written warranty.
Q: Are GoNano products safe for my family, pets, and garden?
A: Yes. All GoNano products are non-toxic, water-based, and VOC-free. They are completely safe for use around children, pets, and gardens — both during application and after cure.
Q: Are your treatments environmentally friendly?
A: Absolutely. GoNano products use nontoxic, water-based formulas with no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Beyond the formula itself, the biggest environmental benefit is what the treatment prevents: by extending the lifespan of roofs, concrete, and wood surfaces by a decade or more, we dramatically reduce the volume of construction materials going to landfill.
Q: Can GoNano treatments be used on commercial properties?
A: Yes. Nano Guard Alberta serves both residential and commercial clients across Alberta. Whether it’s a residential home in Okotoks, a commercial building in Calgary, or a multi-unit property in Red Deer — our treatments are suited to any scale.
Q: How much does a GoNano treatment cost?
A: Shingle treatment starts at approximately $1.50 per square foot — roughly one-tenth the cost of a full roof replacement. Concrete, wood, and membrane treatments are similarly priced relative to the cost of full replacement. Contact us for a specific quote based on your property’s size and surface condition.
Roofing Questions
Q: How old does my roof have to be to qualify for treatment?
A: It’s less about age and more about current condition. GoNano Shingle Saver is ideal for roofs up to 12 years old. GoNano Revive is formulated for roofs between 8 and 25 years old. The free inspection will tell us exactly which product is right for your roof.
Q: Will GoNano treatment void my shingle manufacturer's warranty?
A: No. GoNano treatments do not void warranties from any major shingle manufacturer. This has been confirmed through comprehensive legal review for brands including IKO, Owens Corning, BP, and GAF.
Q: Does the treatment change how my rooflooks?
A: Yes — for the better. The treatment restores the original, fresh appearance of your shingles. Older roofs often look noticeably improved after a GoNano treatment, with a richer, more uniform colour.
Q: What ifit rains after the treatment?
A: No issue. Once the GoNano product has penetrated the first layer of roofing material — approximately two hours after application — rain has no impact on its performance or efficacy
Q: Does GoNano protect against hail?
A: Yes. GoNano shingle treatment upgrades typical Class 1 asphalt shingles to Class 3 or Class 4 hail-impact resistance according to the North American UL2218 Impact Resistance Standard. This is independently tested and documented.
Q: Does the treatment make my roof more flammable?
A: No. GoNano’s nanosilica does not affect fire susceptibility in any direction. Class A shingles remain Class A after treatment, as confirmed by UL790 Fire Standard testing.
Q: How long does the water-beading effect last?
A: The visible water-beading (hydrophobic) effect typically diminishes after 5–8 years depending on local weather conditions. However, this does not affect the treatment’s overall protective performance, which continues for the full 10–15 year period.
Q:Is one treatment enough, or do I need two?
A: One treatment delivers the full 10–15 year protection and warranty. A second treatment can further enhance hail resistance, wind resistance, and water infiltration resistance — though the effects of two treatments have not yet been scientifically quantified.
Q:Is the warranty transferable ifI sell my home?
A: Yes. The GoNano warranty is fully transferable to new homeowners, making it an excellent selling feature for any property.
Q: What do insurance companies say about GoNano?
A: Many clients have successfully presented GoNano as an alternative to full roof replacement to their insurance providers. Most major insurers are aware of the product and recognize the benefit of extending a roof’s lifespan. Outcomes can vary by insurer and policy, so we always recommend discussing your specific situation with your provider.
Q: Should I soft wash my roof before treatment?
A: Soft washing is only required if there is heavy algae or moss growth rooted into the shingles. In most cases, routine dirt and debris do not affect GoNano’s performance. Important note: once GoNano is applied, soft washing is no longer effective and bleach-based washing could eventually degrade the treatment — so it’s best to address any aesthetic concerns before application.
Q: Does GoNano protect against UV radiation?
A: Yes. All GoNano roof treatments reflect UV rays, limiting heat absorption, slowing the aging process, and preventing discolouration and granule loss.
Concrete, Asphalt & Wood
Q: What concrete and asphalt surfaces can be treated?
A: We treat driveways, walkways, patios, parking areas, masonry, stucco, garage floors, and more. If it’s concrete or asphalt and exposed to the Alberta elements, it’s likely a candidate for protection.
Q: How does concrete treatment protect against freeze-thaw damage?
A: GoNano nanoparticles penetrate the micro-pores within concrete and asphalt, blocking moisture from entering. Since there’s no moisture trapped in the material, there’s no ice expansion during freezing temperatures — which is the primary cause of spalling and cracking.
Q: Will the treatment change the appearance of my concrete or driveway?
A: No significant visual change. The treatment is clear and does not alter the natural colour or texture of your concrete or asphalt. Many clients find their surfaces look refreshed after treatment due to the removal of surface buildup during prep.
Q: How does wood treatment differ from traditional staining or sealing?
A: Traditional stains and sealers create a surface film that peels and requires reapplication every 1–2 years. GoNano Wood Saver penetrates the cellular structure of the wood, modifying it from the inside. This means no peeling, no surface film, and protection that lasts years longer than any conventional product.
Q: Can GoNano prevent existing wood rot?
A: GoNano prevents future rot by eliminating moisture absorption — the root cause of rot. However, it cannot reverse existing rot. Severely rotted sections should be replaced before treatment is applied.
The Process
Q: How long does the application take?
A: Most residential treatments are completed in a single day. Large commercial properties may require more time. Cure time after application is just 15– 30 minutes.
Q:Is there any smell or mess during application?
A: No. GoNano treatments are odourless, dustless, and produce no mess. There is no need to vacate your home or move any vehicles, in most cases.
Q: Do I need to prepare my property before the technician arrives?
A: Minimal preparation is needed. We recommend ensuring surfaces are accessible and reasonably clean. For specific surface types, our technician will advise you during the free inspection on any prep steps that may enhance the treatment’s effectiveness.
Q: What happens if my surface doesn't qualify?
A: We’ll tell you honestly — and we’ll explain why. If your roof or surface is in a condition where we cannot honour the warranty, we won’t attempt to sell you a treatment. We’ll provide a clear explanation and, where possible, recommend next steps.
